What July 4th Should Mean To Every American
Happy 4th of July everyone! Or rather, Happy Independence Day! That IS the day we are celebrating, isn’t it?
Having the day off, enjoying barbecues and having a drink or two seems to be de rigeur on a day such as July 4th. Like most major holidays in the United States, there is a historical base for why we celebrate it, yet unlike any other holiday, Independence Day should hold particular significance to us given the multiple scandals going on in the United States lately.
For the love of Pete, PLEASE don’t be like THESE people in this video on YouTube. I know you have more sense than this.
This day in 1776 marks our country’s formal and declared departure from tyrannical British rule. I took the time to read the Declaration of Independence — REALLY read it — and some of the redress points from the original document reflect strikingly similar to what is happening today. It is amazingly true how history tends to repeat itself and we often find ourselves facing similar basic criminalities as the government usurps and abuses the power granted by the voting public.
I must share the points from the document that I thought were scarily real in our current times:
Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.
We know that it is the right of the people to change their government, just as our forefathers did. But even they recognized that people are more willing to suffer through it, at least for a while, and petition in more just ways than one for the government to make changes that are in the People’s interest. It is only after being abused and usurped for some time that it creates an untenable situation where every person is essentially forced into action, to make decisions that are more important to safeguard your future Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness.
Think of the Occupy Wall Street folks that protested for ages against the dictator-like hold of financial institutions in the wake of the 2008 debacle. Ordinary people were pulled together in cohesive fashion to object to what took place. The masses have, on many occasions, protested and gotten petitions signed in an attempt to force the government to take action. Some efforts work; unfortunately, many do not. No doubt, there will come a time where the government will overstep its bounds and it will simply not be enough for the masses to sit back and “take it”. It will be such an egregious act against the populace that one day, it will be enough to break the camel’s back.
Dissolution of these bonds is not a small matter. It has to be a situation where our very livelihood and futures are at risk, positioning us for absolute failure. It is when our rights are dissolved so fully that we are forced into action, forced to make the hard decisions.
He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.
He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.
He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
Among the declaration points are the keeping of armies during times of peace and making that military independent and superior to Civil power. Along with this is subjecting the people to non-Constitutional based jurisdiction and agreeing with the position of said legislation. Now folks, tell me something and be honest with yourself: have we not seen the expansion of military efforts despite the peaceful circumstances currently ongoing in the United States? Is it possible that the “wars” we have been engaged in for well over a decade now are the pretext for military efforts – both foreign and domestic – to continue? Mainstream media has reported that remote drones are being used domestically against “sovereign terrorists“; how many meanings for the word terrorist do we have? Is this country turning into a world where SWAT teams with AK-47s are bum-rushing the homes of citizens going about their daily business? We didn’t consent to this. We shouldn’t consent to this. Similarly, we should not consent to have legislation pass that does not keep with its constitutionality.
When threats surround us from all sides on a financial and military basis, limiting the possibility for us to enjoy Life, Liberty and pursue Happiness, we should recall all the sacrifices made to create this country. We should not take for granted our Power and our Heart when it comes to the things that matter: our friends, families, communities and world.
So as you munch into that cheeseburger and sip on that beer this July 4th, remember that it took a long time to get where we are today. It will take MUCH MORE to keep the liberties so near and dear to us by not being complacent and ignorant to the goings-on around us. In order to have the lives we want, we must not allow those with power to become absolutely corrupted by it and to steal away that which is rightfully ours. We must not allow ourselves to be brainwashed and desensitized, and instead arm ourselves with knowledge. This is for ourselves and for the sake of all future generations.
Read the Declaration of Independence. Remind yourself of what it means: then AND now.
